It is said that the beating retreat ceremony started in the 17th century. In those times, when the fighting ended during the day, the armies used to blow bugles. Which was named Beating Retreat. This tradition was started by the British Army which was later adopted by the Indian Army also.
How was the beating retreat till 1960?
Till the 1960s, beating retreat ceremonies were not held on a very large scale. In this ceremony, which started in 1952, bands of all three wings of the Indian Army used to celebrate the ceremony by playing patriotic tunes in Delhi’s Vijay Chowk as well as Connaught Place. However, at that time this ceremony was not organized covering the entire area of Connaught Place, rather this program was organized in a small park in front of the Regal Building there. Now parking has been built at that place. When the Beating Retreat was started, patriotic tunes were played under the leadership of army musicians like LB Gurung, AFS Reid, H Joseph, Bachan Singh.
